How fucking dumb are we? Next year they might issue a circular declaring that the week is 7 days long.
Insult our intelligence sometimes, but this is baseless and pointless. Everyone gets a holiday on new years.. just because it's on a weekend doesn't make it OK.

"Saturday holiday". Ha. I was angry to know this too. Why can't we enjoy a day off on the new year, like all places in the world? Stupidity has no limits with those..
I know it is very frustrating, but I think I would try to understand. This year, so far, has been very awkwardly scheduled, with ramadan ending in mid-september, lots of vacations have been re organized and schools and colleges are the most to be affected. I think that there was not much "planning" going on this year. Oh well, nevertheless, happy new year guys.
Rose.. there is no need to act in an insulting way.. just announce "no holiday on sunday".. khalas.. end of story.

we here in Libya the public sector has Saturday as holiday all year, except some big public sector companies like the one i work for.. all sleeping at home, only me waking from dawn to get to work.. even traffic is free!

LOL! I mean, grrrr... :) Perhaps 'common sense & respect' was lost in translation? Or, perhaps, somebody really, really, dislikes, New Year's eve? :)
rosh, no one dislikes the new year eve/celebration, at least not in an open country like the UAE you know..same thing actually happened several times with even the Islamic new year's (Al sana Al Hijriya) holiday, it coincided with the weekend, so there was no official holiday for the new year too! it's like two years ago or so..as far as I can remember..so this is not new it happened before..

But, hey, I do hate most New Year partaaays, especially the ones where people get piss drunk, and drunk dial their moms & dads, their ex's and their cats, to wish a New Year!
I will enjoy my Saturday off.....
